With the NBA season just around the corner, sneakerheads and basketball fans alike are on the lookout for the latest releases. Nike has been steadily unveiling a range of new sneakers leading up to the new season. Among the fresh lineup is Ja Morant's very own signature sneaker, the Nike Ja 1. Despite Morant's recent controversial Instagram Live sessions, Nike continues to back the young star. Given Morant's current issues, the upcoming "Smoke" colorway of the Ja 1 might raise some eyebrows with its messaging.
The Nike Ja 1 Smoke comes dominated by a sleek black hue and integrates leather, TPU, ripstop, and mesh to provide wearers with durability and comfort. Black tumbled leather artfully trims the junction of the upper and sole unit, gracefully leading up to the tongue. The iconic Nike Swoosh, rendered in a subdued smokey grey, takes pride of place on the midfoot. The cream-colored ripstop heel panel is a unique addition to this release, which forgoes the customary "TMT" script, boasting the statement "We Aint Ducking No Smoke." The No Smoke inscription on these Ja 1's is derived from the Grizzlies playoff bout with the Timberwolves in the 2022 NBA Playoffs where he was quoted saying, "We ain't ducking no smoke. We running up the chimney." On the heel, Morant’s jersey number "12" is embroidered in a striking sulfur hue, harmonizing with the Ja insignia inside the tongue. Completing the design is a coconut milk-shaded foam midsole complemented by a similarly colored rubber outsole.
Following the initial images appearing, Nike updated photos of the pair that shows the No Smoke quote covered with the usual "TMT." This was the case with the overseas pair of the Ja 1, which comes with a different SKU and outsole. However, this is now the case with the US pair.
The Nike Ja 1 Smoke will release October 6, 2023, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $110.
