Walk into any sneaker store today, and you’ll see plenty of Jordan Retro releases sitting on shelves. Some may even be on discount. If you told that to someone five years ago, they wouldn’t be able to believe it, but that’s the reality in 2026. Overall, Nike is hurting, with shares down over 75% from its peak in 2021, and the company being removed from the S&P 100. As CEO Elliott Hill and all of Nike's leadership look to make changes to bring the company back, Jordan Brand, specifically, was mentioned alongside Nike Sportswear and the Chinese market as areas that need work. One of the first changes will be to scale back on Jordan Retro releases.
Jordan Retros Will Become Scarce
Over the last 12 months, from October 2025 to September 2026, Jordan Brand released an average of 10 retro Air Jordans per month. Consumers cannot realistically afford to purchase every single retro, especially with prices increasing, and when these releases are so clustered together, it results in pairs sitting on shelves. As CEO Elliott Hill puts it, “we have been oversupplying the product.”
Jordan Brand is meant to be the pinnacle of basketball product, but when anyone can walk into a store and see the Jumpman sitting on shelves or grab a pair for under retail on secondary marketplaces and at retailers, the brand loses its status. This scarcity strategy has already been applied to the Air Jordan 1 High.
In 2021, Jordan Brand released 20 different Air Jordan 1 Retro High colorways, but scaled this down to 15 in 2025. For 2026, there’s even less, with only 12, including the upcoming Royal AJ 1 High. If you take out the collab pairs, which include the three Union x fragment design colorways, the Swarovski collab, and the Virgil Abloh Archives Alaska colorway, that puts the inline retro count at just 7 pairs.
In February 2026, 19 pairs of retro Air Jordans were released, though many were collabs, and you have to take into account the fact that NBA All-Star Weekend takes place that month. But really, 19 pairs in one month? If you purchased all of these at retail, that would come out to $4,915, though it is slightly inflated since the Swarovski AJ 1 High retailed for $1,005. Still, taking that out, $3,900 to secure all pairs.
When Will Jordan Retros Scale Down?
Elliott Hill didn’t make it clear exactly when the Jordan Retro release calendar would be slimmed down, but we can expect the scaling of retros to begin sometime in 2027. Will this lead to more hype around Jordan Brand, and potentially impact Nike’s overall growth? Only time will tell, but the days of Jordans sitting on store shelves and stacked releases are coming to an end.
