Nike has worked on quite a few Sashiko-inspired sneakers in its time. Over the past few years, the Air Force 1, Blazer Mid, and Dunk Low have all received the traditional Japanese embroidery treatment. Even the Air Jordan 4 has seen this ancient technique applied on its uppers. With all that said, to celebrate 25 years since Christian Tresser officially unveiled the Air Max 97 to the world, the Beaverton-based brand has revealed the Nike Air Max 97 "Sashiko," and it's no doubt one of the most unique AM 97s that you've ever seen.

Split into two vastly different aesthetics, the top half of this Air Max 97 arrives in a light grey hue and done up in mesh and leather for that water ripple-inspired design that we all know and love. Neon accents make their way throughout for a look that is sure to turn heads, and just in case these weren't eye-catching enough, it's coated in 3M so they'll reflect light even in darker conditions. The bottom half, on the other hand, nods to the traditional Japanese stitching technique that was first used during the 1600s. With a series of intricately designed patterns and motifs, this is crafted from buttery suede. Volt tones hit the pull tabs, Swoosh branding, and Air unit, and speaking of which, the midsole is lined with a healthy dose of gum rubber for added traction and durability with every step.

The Nike Air Max 97 Sashiko is set to release in 2022 and will be available in men's sizes with a retail price yet TBA. Expected to drop at Nike, the SNKRS app, and select stockists worldwide, you definitely don't want to miss out on this special edition colorway.
