Thematic sneaker releases have always been a part of footwear brands' release strategies throughout the year as we see a slew of Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and other holiday-themed releases. One that hits home for Nike is Independence Day as the American-founded brand consistently has put out kicks covered in red, white, and blue in celebration of the July 4th event. While in the past this celebration has drummed up controversy for Nike due to the inclusion of Betsy Ross’ original American Flag, 2023’s Nike Air Max 97 “Independence Day” is keeping things extra simple.
Forgoing any actual symbols related to the country, the Air Max 97 comes dressed in a triple-shaded combo of red, white, and blue that is a clear nod to the American Flag. Blue shades take over the mudguard and tongue while stark whites land on the base layer’s mesh, visible on the midfoot and portions of the profile, and along two of the wavy leather overlays. Completing the trifecta of American colors are red accents along the top two wavy panels and via branding details located on the tongue, midfoot, and heel. Rounding out the design is the white Air Max 97 midsole with a full-length exposed Air unit paired with a blue and white rubber outsole.
The Nike Air Max 97 Independence Day (2023) is set to release in the Fall of 2023 through Nike and select NSW retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $175.
