When Tinker Hatfield envisioned the Air Max 1, he created a sneaker and a cultural icon that revolutionized the concept of athletic footwear. Drawing inspiration from the avant-garde architecture of the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, Hatfield introduced the world to the first-ever visible Air unit. This feature has since become synonymous with Nike's innovation and design prowess. Despite initial skepticism from within Nike, the Air Max 1's transparent window into the sole's Air cushioning became a defining hallmark of the brand. In March 2024, Nike celebrates this legacy by releasing the Air Max 1 '86 OG Museum Masterpiece, a tribute that elevates the sneaker to the status of fine art.
The Museum Masterpiece edition of the Air Max 1 ‘86 is a marvel of design, transforming the classic silhouette into a wearable piece of art. The sneaker's upper is treated to resemble a piece of marble, complete with natural imperfections and subtle color variations that give the material its timeless appeal. Suede details on the Swoosh blend seamlessly with the marble motif, enhancing the sneaker's premium aesthetic. At the same time, the mesh on the tongue and sockliner opt for a slightly whiter shade, adding depth to the overall design.
Inside, the insoles are adorned with custom graphics; the left insole features a museum label crediting Tinker Hatfield as the artist behind the Air Max 1 and noting its significance as the first shoe to feature a visible Nike Air unit. The right insole carries a playful warning: "Please do not step on the art," along with Swoosh branding below. Completing the design is a foam midsole that also mimics marble, incorporating the OG Big Bubble Air unit, distinguished by its four pillars—harkening back to the original Air Max design that was recalled in 1987—paired with a tonal outsole.
The Nike Air Max 1 '86 OG Museum Masterpiece will release on March 9, 2024, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $170.
