64 teams entered, but only one can claim the championship at the end of the March Madness tournament. After a hard-fought battle all season long, Michigan cut down the net and walked out of Lucas Oil Stadium as NCAA champions.
It all came down to a monster matchup between number one seed Michigan and number two UConn, both of which played their hearts out across their four previous matches throughout the tournament and their full season of play that started back in November.
For Michigan, this marks its first national championship W since 1989 and the first championship victory for a Big Ten school in 26 years. It wasn’t given either, as UConn put up a solid fight and almost made a last-minute comeback that was thwarted by Trey McKenny hitting a 26-footer for three to extend the lead to nine with only 1:50 on the clock. As a whole, the Wolverines were not shooting well, with the team hitting 38% of its shots and making just two 3-pointers the whole game.
