Laika, the renowned stop-motion animation studio behind hits like Coraline, ParaNorman, and Kubo and the Two Strings, has a storied history with sneaker culture. With the studio’s deep connection to Nike—thanks to its founder Travis Knight, son of Phil Knight—Laika has delivered some of the most memorable collaborations in recent years, including the ParaNorman Air Foamposite One and the Coraline Dunks. As Laika celebrates the 15th Anniversary of Coraline, they’re partnering with Converse to bring a new collection that captures the essence of this cult classic.
This time, the focus is on the iconic Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star 70s. The Coraline x Converse Collection centers on a Chuck Taylor colorway that draws inspiration from the protagonist’s starry sweater, a key element in the film’s aesthetic. The upper is constructed from blue lurex jersey material, adorned with embroidered silver stars that mimic Coraline’s signature look. Brass eyelets, resembling the Seeing Stone from the movie, add a touch of mystery and tie in directly with the film’s themes. The tongue tag features co-branded labels, while custom insoles carry more nods to the movie’s rich visual storytelling. Rounding out the design is a white midsole paired with a black rubber outsole.
In addition to the pre-order of this star sweater-inspired Chuck Taylor (which can be accessed by scanning a QR code if you see the film in theaters), the collection will also include a customizable option through Converse’s By You platform. This feature allows fans to create their own Coraline-themed Chucks, offering unique options such as different colors, graphics, and more film-related details.
The Coraline x Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star 70s Hi Star Sweater is currently available for pre-order, with the pair shipping sometime in November 2024. The rest of the collection will release on November 21, 2024, through Converse online. Coming in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $100 for the Star Sweater colorway.
