Throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, French superstar Kylian Mbappé laced up boots with The Swoosh prominently displayed, earning his second Golden Boot and surpassing Messi to become the leading goalscorer in World Cup history with 22 goals across his three tournaments. But next time France takes the pitch for the World Cup, Mbappé will be wearing a Swiss logo on his feet as he’s just left Nike for a new endorsement deal with On.
Kylian Mbappé's History With Nike
At just eight years old, Kylian Mbappé joined Nike, and as the prodigy rose through the ranks of football stardom, he remained loyal to his Nike family. His breakout years in the late 2010s also came with signature editions of the Nike Mercurial, with his Mercurial Superfly 7 Bondy Dreams in 2019 making Mbappé the youngest player ever to receive their own player-exclusive edition of a boot. Since then, we’ve seen 12 different signature editions of Nike cleats hit shelves, but rumors swirled for months that he was contemplating a move away from The Swoosh.
Kylian Mbappé’s Deal with On Football
The exact terms of Kylian Mbappé’s deal with On and its new football division have not been disclosed. Still, the Swiss company announced that he will be working alongside product engineers to help develop and refine football boots, which are expected to launch in 2027. The French star will also act as a global ambassador for the company, extending beyond just football.
“From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow’s game,” says Kylian Mbappé. “I want to bring my experience and perspective into what we create, push what’s possible through innovation, and always stay true to the joy of football. We have a shared dream, and this is only the beginning.”
On’s Entry into Football
Mbappé’s move to On is a clear sign that their football division is serious about developing, though he isn’t the first superstar to sign with the label. In 2025, retired French football legend Thierry Henry joined On as the Director of Football, helping kickstart On’s football push. Sydney Schertenleib, the Swiss women’s football star who also plays for FC Barcelona, was the first active player to sign with the brand in December 2025.
Unlike traditional football boots, On will be using its revolutionary LightSpray technology to develop its footwear. The sprayed filament is designed to outperform traditional materials while also reducing weight.
What’s Next for Mbappé and On
As mentioned above, the first products from On’s football division are expected to hit shelves in 2027. Since On hasn’t released any football boots or given Sydney Schertenleib a product to wear, Mbappé likely takes the pitch in Nike footwear, albeit with branding covered up. He could also begin to wear prototypes, but that’s pure speculation, so we’ll have to wait and see what the French star wears when he plays in his next match with Real Madrid against Atletico Madrid on September 20.
