In the sneaker world, few collaborations like Joe Freshgoods and New Balance capture attention. The Chicago-based designer has stirred up excitement, teasing his upcoming New Balance 650 collab. In the recent campaign for his collaboration with Mitchell & Ness, a model sported this unseen pair of 650s. This will be his first official adaptation of New Balance's retro basketball sneaker, following the success of his previous work with the 550 in the Conversations Amongst Us Collection.
The teased New Balance 650 arrives in a creamy hue, with leather panels for a refined yet sporty look. JFG branding replaces the typical 650 text near the toe, and a co-branded New Balance and JFG logo adorns the tongue tag. A neutral "N" on the midfoot adds to the cohesive design, complemented by New Balance branding on the suede collar overlay. The underfoot features a cream-colored, New Balance-branded sole unit, completed by a grey rubber outsole.
One month following this teased image, Joe Freshgoods confirmed release details and the inspiration behind his collaborative New Balance 650. This release leans more toward "an art project" as opposed to a full-scale sneaker releases and will be limited to just 500 individually hand-numbered pairs. Inspiration for the design comes from an old magazine where JFG found an image of Michael Jordan sporting a pair of New Balances. Special details on the pair nod to this, including the hand embroidered into the tongue that holds the "JFG" logo as well as 1984 being placed nearby. The sneaker's hangtag also contains notes as if the pair is a sample and even has MJ's shoe size (13) written.
The Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 650 Stuntman will release September 9, 2023, in Chicago at Joe's Every Now and Then storefront located at 1008 W Lake St. Coming in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $185.
