We’re still recovering from Joe Freshgoods’ three-pack of New Balance 1890 colorways, but there are more renditions on the way from the Boston-based footwear brand. Not only is the 1890 one of the headliners for the upcoming Grey Days collection, but the model is staying minimal with a new project from Montreal’s own JJJJound.

In typical JJJJound fashion, the design studio took to Instagram to post in-hand images of its upcoming NB 1890 collaboration, though over the weekend some early imagery leaked. The shoes stay within JJJJound’s minimalist ethos, as the mesh runner replaces the leather and TPU panels with fused overlays. Most of the panels are coated in black hues, including the mesh base, overlays, midfoot “N” logo, and heel overlay, while white accents land on the tongue, lace set, and JJJJound logos on the lateral heel.

Underfoot sits the original New Balance 2002 midsole in white and cream, featuring a full-length ABZORB pod system and a black rubber outsole. In case you didn’t know, the 1890 is actually a mash-up of the New Balance 890v3, a performance running sneaker from 2013, with the sole unit from the OG 2002. No, not the 2002R we are used to seeing on the market. That model uses the 860v2’s sole unit; we’re talking about the original 2002 Made in USA from 2010 that retailed for $250.

The JJJJound x New Balance 1890 Black White will be released sometime in the near future via JJJJound and select retailers online and in-store. It’s also possible we see another colorway join the pack.
