Around the globe, people have spent years repurposing shoes at the end of their lives by cutting off the back half and turning them into sandals. It’s a practical way to give a pair a second life when the tread is gone and slipping into a pair without retying the laces has demolished the structural integrity of the heel. Like so many fashion adjustments crafted out of utility, the sneaker mule has turned into a full-fledged trend, with brands across the industry chopping the heel off classic models.

Reminiscent of the open-back mule pairs that Kiko Kostadinov has crafted for Asics in the past, the new GR collection arrives in three classic metallic Asics colorways: Silver, Silver and Brown, and Black and Silver.

Built like a classic mesh and synthetic retro runner from the front, the latest version of the sneaker mullet is sporty up front and ready for a beach trip in the back. In addition to the Asics version, we just saw pairs of an adidas Samba Mule and a Kids of Immigrants collab on a Nike T90 Mule. Safe to say the trend is in full swing.
