“That’s what the fu*k I’m talking about.” That’s how 20-year-old gold medal figure skater Alysa Liu finished her podium-topping freestyle routine in Milan at this year’s Winter Olympic Games, putting into words exactly what the rest of us were already feeling about her perfect performance. After skyrocketing to the pinnacle of her sport’s global stage, the Bay Area local is now the face of Nike’s latest campaign, where her free-flowing attitude is put in focus.
Nike Sportswear tapped Liu for its latest campaign, interviewing the figure skating star and photographing her wearing the upcoming Air Liquid Max and a never-before-seen colorway of the retro Nike Moon Shoe in navy blue with a white Swoosh. In the interview, Liu wasn’t shy about her selective mentality when it comes to stardom.
“These days, I say no to more things that I used to say yes to,” Liu said. “I like to hear people out and I like to try new things but I trust my instincts. When I came back to figure skating, people said I would have to change my hair and I said, ‘No, I won’t be changing my hair.’ People give me song suggestions, and I’ll take them into consideration, but if I don’t like something, I’m not going to skate to it. I want to make choices that feel like me.”
