Jordan Brand has always benefited from its namesake Michael Jordan’s skill on and off the court. Beyond his GOAT status, Jordan was the best pitchman the NBA had ever seen, even starring in the best animated sports movie ever made. One of his secrets? Always get the best co-stars, and we’re not just talking Bugs Bunny.
Johnny Kilroy is Back
Jordan’s most famous early commercials feature a young Spike Lee reprising his Mars Blackmon role from She’s Gotta Have It, but in 1993 it was Steve Martin’s turn to help hype His Airness. Poking fun at Jordan’s mid-career retirement, with a campaign suggesting that Jordan was playing NBA hoops in disguise under the name Johnny Kilroy.
In 2012, Jordan dropped the Air Jordan 9 Kilroy Pack as a tribute to the Kilroy campaign, using color combos from Michael’s disguises in the ad spots on six pairs. For the What The version, Jordan mixes and matches the colorways from all six shoes on an asymmetric pair with red leather on the left upper, black nubuck on the right, and a mix of yellow, orange, and blue accents swapping panels across the two shoes. The tongue is plastered with tags for each of the personas, including Johnny Kilroy, Fontay Montana, Bentley Ellis, Calvin Bailey, Slim Jenkins, and Motorboat Jones.
