adidas Converts the Handball Spezial Into a Trainer
Published
While classic adidas trainers of the past can no longer perform at the level of modern silhouettes, adidas has decided to update one of its most popular designs, the Handball Spezial, and turn it into a performance sneaker — the adidas Trainer Spezial.
The Training Spezial retains the low-profile shape and distinctive design DNA that made the original a favorite among athletes in the ‘80s and fashion circles in the modern era. But beneath the vintage styling lies a modern toolkit built for rigorous workouts. A dual-density REPETITOR foam midsole brings a stiffer heel for enhanced stability during heavy lifts and a softer forefoot for cushioning during dynamic movement. The CORDURA® nylon upper delivers lightweight flexibility and durability, while the Traxion outsole enhances grip for sprints and lateral cuts.
This performance-first approach has already won over athletes who’ve put the Training Spezial to the test. In an interview with Morning Chalk Up, Ty Jenkins, a multi-sport athlete sponsored by adidas, said, “They are super sharp and have that classic look, but they are still a training shoe at heart. They have a hard sole, which is good for lifting, but still find a way to be significantly lighter than most training shoes.”
Another early adopter, Jorge Fernandez, appreciated how it adapts to his mixed training style: “I wore them at WFP (World Fitness Project) because they gave me a great balance of stability and flexibility, which is perfect for workouts that mix lifting and dynamic movements. They feel lighter, more responsive, and still solid underfoot.”
The adidas Training Spezial is available now through adidas.com in two colorways, Black White and White Black. Check below for direct links to cop the shoes, and be on the lookout for more colorways later this year.
