Air Jordan 16 Release Dates

In 2001, Nike took a huge gamble by introducing Wilson Smith III as the lead designer of the Air Jordan 16 (XVI). This was the first Air Jordan model that was not led by Tinker Hatfield since the Air Jordan 3 (III). Smith’s Air Jordan 16 is one of the most polarizing to come from the collection mainly due to the marching band-like magnetic shroud that covers most of the upper. Check out the “Ginger”, “Midnight Navy” or “Countdown Pack” Air Jordan 16s here.

Making its debut in 2001, the Air Jordan 16, designed by Wilson Smith III, took over the reins from the legendary Tinker Hatfield, marking a new era in the Jordan Brand's design philosophy. The AJ16 is renowned for its unique gaiter/shroud that can be detached, providing the shoe with a dual personality - one that can effortlessly transition between the hardwood court and the street.

This distinctive design element was paired with an innovative blend of technical features, including a hidden quick lace system, patent leather toe cap, visible Zoom Air cushioning, and a lightweight Phylon midsole. The Air Jordan 16 presented a harmonious fusion of function and style, embodying the essence of Michael Jordan, both as a professional athlete and a style icon.

Prominent colorways like the "Cherrywood," the "Ginger," and the memorable "Midnight Navy" contributed to its growing popularity. Collaborations with exclusive labels like Trophy Room have added a fresh dimension to its appeal, further enhancing its status within the sneaker community. Despite the initial skepticism due to the change in the design team, the Air Jordan 16 has been appreciated for its innovative design and remains a coveted silhouette among Jordan collectors and enthusiasts.
